The 2016 Mayfield Mayfair was on the afternoon of Saturday 14th of May. We were lucky with the weather, with quite a few sunny spells and only clouds inbetween. Hundreds of people thronged the High Street, which was, as usual, closed to traffic for the occasion.
Five schools performed Maypole dances – Mayfield Primary School, Bricklehurst Manor School, Pembury School, Skippers Hill Preparatory School and Mayfield pre-school.
Here is a video of Skippers Hill performing a Maypole dance called “The Twister”, the first time we have tried this dance at a Mayfair
The Ashdown Forest Morris Men danced and the Robin Hood Mummers performed their songs and plays in a packed afternoon. In addition, there was the usual attractions of giant skittles, Splat the Rat, arts and crafts stalls, local produce, antiques, Bric-a-Brac and books. Food and drink included a choice of hog roast, BBQ, Pimm’s, strawberries, teas and cakes.
Ben the local blacksmith showed off his skill by using his mobile forge to make delicate ironwork leaves much to the admiration of onlookers.
Thank you to everyone who helped out, beforehand, during the event and clearing up afterwards; and thank you to everyone who turned up to support the fair and enjoy the afternoon.
Proceeds from the Mayfair went towards Christmas lights for the village and local charities. We continued the efforts of 2015 to ensure that the High Street is well decorated and added to extent and number of Christmas trees on the shops and houses.
